1977 Cockburns "Vintage" Port

The vintage port that never was, but is, if that makes sense.

1977 was widely declared, but the then owners of Cockburns decided not to (against the advice of the winemaker). The winemaker went ahead and bottled 1340 bottles anyway and put them to the back of the cellar not to be disturbed until the Symington family took over the ownership in 2006. As a special bicentenary edition Symingtons released the port in 2015, and it's right up there with the best in term of quality.

Now fully mature the port is sweet, rich and still full of ripe cherry, damson and liquorice spice. It's an absolute delight, so thank goodness it was allowed to be released retrospectively as a vintage port.
